Each year SBWR gives many educational presentations to schools, community groups and private gatherings. For the youngest children we often read Owl Babies or some other appealing book. Sometimes our owls help teachers present books like Owls in the Family. At other times the children are not fluent in English and our birds help with language development. High-schoolers and adults enjoy our humorous and informative slide presentations. We also attend many community events, providing a booth with interesting things to see, read, touch and learn. We also offer items for purchase, which helps us to raise much-needed funds. To each of these events we bring some of our non-releasable birds of prey, including Red-tailed Hawks, Red-shouldered Hawks, Great Horned Owls, Kestrels, Merlins, a Burrowing Owl and a Western Screech Owl. Each of these birds has been carefully trained by qualified volunteers and is comfortable being with the public. These birds are covered by state and federal education permits and each year bring joy and awe to over 30,000 people. Read more about our education birds in Our Family section. SBWR receives many calls for help each day (often more than 50 per day during “orphan season” in spring and summer) and we answer over 14,000 calls per year. Each child or adult who calls our wildlife line learns from us about the animal he or she has found, and this fosters a caring attitude toward our wild environment. This good will toward wildlife is passed on to the families and friends of the caller.
