MEET THE BIRDS WE USE FOR OUR EDUCATIONAL PRESENTATIONS

 

Bella is a female American Kestrel (Falco sparverius), acquired in 2001. She had a fractured left wing tip, origin unknown. Her feathers do not grow properly and she has limited flight.

 

 

 

 

Xena is a female Red-tailed Hawk (Buteo jamaicensis), acquired in 2001. She had been electrocuted somewhere locally, and sustained damage to both “wrists”. Her right wing-tip self-amputated, leaving her unable to fly.

 

 

 

Miss Luna (06-53) is a female Barn Owl (Tyto alba). She was brought to us with 3 other nestmates from a hay load. She developed a small growth on her left elbow, which limits her flight.

 

 

 

 

Cinda (07-C102) is a female American Kestrel (Falco sparverius). She came to us from a shelter in Los Angeles. She has soft tissue damage of her left wing and has limited flight.

 

 

 

 

Pierce (9-A27) is a male Red-tailed Hawk (Buteo jamaicensis) who had a fracture of his left radius and ulna (wing) but was kept by the finder for too long before he was brought in to repair it. He has limited flight and lives with Xena.

 

 

 

 

 

Terra (10-C401) is a female Burrowing Owl (Speotyto cunicularia). She was being chased into the ocean by seagulls at the Port of Long Beach, Terminal Island, when she was rescued by a member of the public. Her right wing was luxated and she has limited flight.

 

 

 

 

 

Rocky (11-C36) Speotyto cunicularia) who came to us from the Port of Long Beach a fractured right wrist. He has limited flight.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Tempe (12- C492b) is a Western Screech Owl Otus kennicottii came to us from Ojai Raptor Center. They received her as a fledgling. She came to us because she had been unsuccessful hunting live mice, apparently due to vision problems.

 

 

 

 

 

Eddie ( 12-A48) is a Great Horned Owl Bubo virginianus was found by the side of the road in Torrance after being hit by a car. He had damage to his left eye and left wing. He is unable to fly well enough for release and probably has some vision loss.
